Why You Need a Wooden Dummy

A misunderstanding about the Mook Jong (wooden dummy) is indicative of our misapprehension of all-out fighting. As self-defenders we must understand that violence isn't something we choose. It very often happens at a time and place of the enemy''s choosing and this means non-optimal environments. Sport fighting and sparring are extremely helpful in our development. No doubt. They teach us many lessons, but we can be suckered into being "hard pragmatists" who think that the ring or cage is the ONLY test of combat efficiency. The reality is that fighting in cramped spaces, surrounded by uneven footing, hard surfaces, and maybe multiple opponents too, is quite likely. This requires a footwork and shifting scheme that allows us to maximize our position with small steps, pivots, and shifts. This is the heart and soul of the dummy. It's not, repeat not, a speed tool, or a means in which to harden our arms. Instead, it's an ingenious device and form designed to make us like water!
