Hardy Roses for Cold Climates

If you're growing in a cold-winter climate, you should select roses that can survive the cold. Here's a list of cold-hardy roses bred for places with cold winters. Many featured on this list will be hardy down to USDA zones 2, 3, 4, and 5. That "zone hardiness" refers to the coldest average winter temperatures these roses are expected to survive. Let me add: grafted roses can be pretty vulnerable unless the graft union is well protected (mounding soil or otherwise). Roses in pots are also far more susceptible to damage, and may need additional protection (or pick an even hardier variety than generally required for your area). Reliable snow cover is helpful in keeping the canes from drying out in cold winter winds. Younger plants may need more protection until they're well established.
