Of course, it's a super important topic – especially now, when we have to think about covering the "bare" soil with some mulch before winter. Here are a few easy-to-remember facts: What mulches should I use in the garden? 🐞 garden compost 🐞 composted manure 🐞 composted bark or wood chips 🐞 leaves, composted or simply left in the beds to decompose naturally 🐞 perennial or annual green manures 🐞 plants already growing in the soil, why remove them? Wait until spring 🐞 Cardboard or bio-textiles (e.g., corn, sheep's wool, hemp) and straw Why do we mulch in the fall? 🐞 Applying natural mulch in the fall locks in heat in the soil, which is great for its health. As the mulch continues to decompose, it releases nutrients into the soil below, which in turn are absorbed by plants (essentially, mulch nourishes the soil, which then nourishes the plants). Therefore, mulch not only improves soil structure but also improves its fertility. Mulch also introduces microorganisms into the soil and feeds them. 🐞 A warm blanket is very good for the microorganisms that live in our soil – it protects them and the soil from erosion and cold. Remember, microorganisms are responsible for the health of our soil! We need to take care of them. 🐞 When temperatures drop in winter, the soil can repeatedly freeze and thaw, which can damage plant roots. Mulch insulates the soil, preventing it from freezing and thawing, and protects roots from damage. This will keep your plants healthy and strong in spring. 🔸🔸🔸 🛒👀 Find more inspiration in my books.
