Explaining voice registers: Chest & Head, falsetto and chiaro scuro.learning from Celeb teachers
Definition of head voice: partial vibration of vocal chords with their full closure * Definition of head falsetto: partial vibration of vocal chords without their total closure. ** Head falsetto can be formed also by raised larynx position(the weakest sound possible) *** Imagine your vocal chords as a guitar string: in order to raise the pitch one has to shorten the string by pressing down the string on one of the guitar frets: you make the string shorter and by making it shorter you raise the pitch.**** But don't you think that every note is pitched by shortening vocal folds length. That would be a register change every time you sing a different note. It rather works like a guitar capo: changes the base and establishes the bottom of this particular register. ***** So, how it happens: in passagio zone vocal folds want to get shorter to switch into a partial length mode function. That's why they break into a head voice or falsetto, they simply have no strength (support) of continuing with the same full length mode of vocal chords. They need either switch(get shorter) or extra support from a diaphragm that can help to get to higher pitches without changing a register as in chiaro-scuro way of voice production. Raising larynx without shortening vocal folds may result in loosing chest and gaining only falsetto since falsetto may also be based on higher larynx position(week head voice) and lower larynx position(strong head voice) and shorter vocal folds. ****** We can also call a head voice as reinforced falsetto or shorten vocal folds way of production And chiaro-scuro as reinforced chest falsetto or full length vocal folds total closure way of production. Some mistakenly assume that head falsetto can be brought by reinforcing it to a chiaro-scuro sound.******* That wrong assumption comes out of misunderstanding of chest and head voices. Reinforcing a head falsetto can only bring a head voice but never a chest or chiaro-scuro voice because a chest voice or chiaro-scuro voice is a separate register and requires full vocal length way of production. The switch from one regime of working to another will take a significant timber change and will result in a voice break. Now we see clearly 4 ways of voice production: Chest(falsetto) voice & chiaro-scuro, Head falsetto & Head voice. We can put them in 2 categories calling them chest register and head register. Only chest voice (chiaro-scuro) is capable of unification of those two like in guitar case When you play without capo you play the whole guitar register When you play with a capo you are only capable of playing what is above the capo.******* On a subject of a raised larynx: raised larynx may produce higher notes but very weakly since it Has only small on no acoustic ambiance in a singers throat and acts if by analogy with an electric guitar without an amp and capable of being produced only by mikes.
