"You Weren't in Combat" — The VA Benefits Argument That Needs a Real Answer

"You weren't actually in combat. You were just doing a regular job. Why should taxpayers fund your VA disability?" If you've served and received VA disability benefits, there's a decent chance someone; a coworker, a family member, maybe even another veteran; has said something like that to you. Or you've seen it in comments. Or you've read it in a news article. This is not a fringe opinion. It shows up in policy debates, editorial boards, and congressional discussions. And it deserves a serious, informed answer, not anger, not defensiveness, but a clear and complete response grounded in law, history, ethics, and fact. In this video I'm examining the argument on its own terms. I'm going to give it the most fair hearing I can. And then I'm going to dismantle it, carefully, completely, and with respect to everyone involved. Because the veterans who served as cooks, mechanics, clerks, medics, MPs, logistics specialists, and a hundred other "non-combat" roles deserve to know exactly why their benefits are legitimate legally, morally, historically, and practically. And the civilians who ask this question deserve a real answer.
