How Belly Dancing Became 'Shameful'

In this video essay, I trace the history of belly dance (raqs sharqī / raqs baladī) from ancient goddess worship to Ottoman courts, colonial distortions, and today’s censorship and stigma. We’ll look at Orientalism, gender, queerness, the “foreign vs. local” double standard, and why male belly dancers face unique risks. I also compare parallel cases like India’s devadasi and Côte d’Ivoire’s Mapouka to show how colonial rule reshaped dance across the Global South.
