Ngkala Rocks
The Infamous Ngkala Rocks is located at the top half of Fraser Island (k"gari), just above Waddy Point. If you decide to travel to the northerly most point Sandy Cape, you have to traverse Ngkala Rocks. Over the years the coffee rock has eroded into a defined track allowing most vehicles to travel through this tight obstacle. Once through the coffee rock you negotiate an up hill battle of soft sand and potential vehicles coming from the opposite direction. It doesn't matter if you're travelling north or south, if you stop in the soft sand you need to start your recovery. It's best to have an observer walk to the opposite end to communicate with the other vehicles so you can have a clear run. I like to drive in high range to get more momentum to float over the sand, I generally run my tyre pressures at 18PSI. It's best to drive early morning when the sand is cool and firm, during the day the sun will heat the sand, making it very soft. The more vehicles that get bogged and dig up the sand will increasing others to get bogged. It's great if it's raining, this firms up the sand making it much easier to drive through.
