In times when field hygiene is becoming more of a focus, the range of knife rollers is also increasing. We were in the field with the Kerner X-Cut-Solo 600 and used it – as shown here – in combination with a compact disc harrow on corn stalks. Afterwards, we also used it solo. However, the manufacturer generally recommends combining it with a cultivator or a disc harrow at the rear. The 6-meter-wide machine was mounted with a double headstock to allow the X-Cut to be used with both the front and rear linkages. For front-mounted installation, this machine was equipped with the optional steering headstock. The machine concept includes a cross-cutting knife roller at the front and a longitudinally cutting row of corrugated discs behind it. Upon request, the corrugated discs can be hydraulically adjusted to their working depth. Both the individual segments of the knife roller and the holders for each pair of corrugated discs are mounted on rubber buffers to allow for minimal soil contour following. To ensure the roller maintains sufficient contact pressure, Kerner offers optional weights for the X-Cut. In our case, however, these had been constructed by the contractor we visited, as had the lighting support.
