Antes de tirar tu microondas viejo… mira lo que puedes hacer

In this video, I'll show you how to repurpose an old, broken microwave to build a very useful homemade tool. Instead of throwing the appliance away, I'll reuse one of its most interesting components, the timer, to create a battery charger for both cars and motorcycles, with controlled and predictable operation. Throughout the video, I explain step by step how to identify and remove the microwave's timer, how it works internally, and how it can be used to limit charging time, preventing unnecessary battery overcharging. This type of timer is particularly useful because it's designed for robust and repetitive operation, making it ideal for this type of home application. I also show the general wiring diagram of the charger, explaining how to make the basic connection to charge 12-volt batteries in both motorcycles and cars. The goal isn't to replace a professional charger, but rather to provide a simple and economical solution for controlled charging, testing, or occasional battery maintenance. Throughout the process, I detail which components can be reused, which should be replaced, and which parts of the microwave should never be used. The entire assembly is designed to be understandable even for people with basic electronics knowledge, provided that safety guidelines are followed. This project demonstrates that many seemingly useless appliances still contain valuable parts, and that with a little know-how, they can be transformed into practical tools for the workshop. Important Safety Precautions Regarding High Voltage Before starting any work with a microwave, it is essential to understand that this appliance can be extremely dangerous even when unplugged. Inside, there are components that operate at very high voltages and can store electrical energy for extended periods. Never handle a microwave if you cannot correctly identify the high-voltage capacitor. This component can retain several thousand volts even after hours of being disconnected from the power supply, and an accidental discharge can be fatal. It must always be safely discharged before touching any part of the circuit. The microwave's high-voltage transformer should not be used for this type of project. This transformer operates at dangerous voltages that are unsuitable and unsafe for charging batteries, and its use can cause severe electric shock, fire, or personal injury. All work must be performed with the microwave completely disconnected from the electrical grid. Never rely on switches or the timer itself as a safety measure. The only safe way is to unplug the appliance. Always use tools with insulated handles and work in a dry, well-lit, and unhurried environment. If you are not experienced working with electricity, it is best not to undertake this project or to do so only under the supervision of a qualified professional. This homemade charger should only be used for testing or controlled charging, always under supervision. Never leave a battery charging unattended and stop the process immediately if you observe excessive heat, abnormal noises, or any other unusual behavior. This video is for educational and experimental purposes. Any modification or reuse of electrical components is done at your own risk.
