With a recent drama dealing with the infringement of teachers' rights creating a significant stir, similar cases of victimization are surging in Daegu as well. Sixty percent of all cases of infringement occurred in middle schools, and there were a significant number of instances where parents were the perpetrators. Reporter Lee Jong-young reports. [Report] The Committee for the Protection of Teachers' Rights, established to protect teachers facing infringement, reviewed a total of 211 cases of infringement in Daegu last year, a 27% increase compared to the previous year. Sixty percent of the total cases occurred in middle schools, followed by high schools. The most common types of offenses were insult and defamation, but there were also cases of obstruction of educational activities, injury and assault, and sexual violence. While the majority of perpetrators were students, parents were more frequently involved in cases involving elementary school students and below. [Teacher Victim of Infringement on Teachers' Rights / Voice Distortion: "A guardian came in during class, shouted and yelled, and there was no apology later..."] Severe disciplinary measures against offending students, such as special education, suspension from school, and class reassignment, accounted for 34% of cases. However, for parents, an apology and a pledge to prevent recurrence were all there was. Teachers' organizations state that malicious complaints from guardians are high in elementary schools, while the rate of infringement on students' educational activities is high in middle and high schools. They argue that customized measures, such as an institution-level complaint response system, student separation measures, and a student guidance support system, are urgently needed. [Kim Tae-wan / Superintendent of Elementary Personnel at Daegu Office of Education: "Regarding false accusations of child abuse, we have arranged for teachers to be connected one-on-one with lawyers we have appointed to provide support starting from the investigation stage."] Teachers' organizations unanimously agreed that in addition to post-incident measures, preemptive measures must be established to ensure that teachers' legitimate educational activities are not infringed upon.
