Was there a cover-up regarding the pollution of agricultural products in the "Land of Fires"? This is the question posed by Professor Massimo Fagnano, one of the authors of the study that found that only 2% of agricultural land in Campania is polluted. According to the Agronomy professor, the media and government's focus on agricultural products was aimed at reassuring the population: "It's easy to solve the agricultural problem; just avoid eating those specific products. However, what emerges from our findings is much more worrying: both the air and groundwater are polluted." We asked ourselves which areas in Campania are truly polluted and what stage their cleanup is at. Only 60% of the agricultural land analyzed in the 58 municipalities participating in the Land of Fires pact is polluted—as Fanpage.it had anticipated. The study, however, does not take into account the 1,500 sites listed by ARPA Campania in the regional remediation plan: these are former landfills, large areas, former industrial zones, and sites of national interest. None of these areas have been remediated. We have verified the dramatic condition of the Giugliano area, the Sogeri and Bortolotto landfills in Castel Volturno, and the contaminated fields in Acerra. "The government hasn't invested a single euro in these studies," confirms Fagnano, while the former commissioner of the Caserta Basin Consortium, Stefano Tonziello, summarizes the state of remediation in Campania: "Nothing at all has been done." Amid this stagnation, the Campania Region has allocated €23 million for communications aimed at rehabilitating the image of agricultural products from the Land of Fires. The largest share went to Aurelio de Laurentiis's Napoli Calcio, who was unable to explain to us what the team is doing to promote food excellence.
