God changed his address and almost no one noticed when. In less than two centuries, the God close to the enchanted cosmos, who heard prayers, acted in the sacraments, and spoke through nature, became the "watchmaker" who created the machine of the universe and then left. In this episode, I trace how this happened: the Reformation removing the intermediaries between us and God (with good intentions, but withdrawing his daily presence), Newton revealing a universe-machine so perfect that it seemed to dispense with the operator, and deism transforming God into the distant Architect who does not intervene, does not answer, does not reveal himself. The ironic detail: Newton wrote more about theology than about physics. He was extremely devout. But posterity remembered him precisely for the cosmos that made God superfluous. And when a God ceases to be present in your pain, in your death, in your love, he becomes, in practice, indistinguishable from any God. This was the transitional stage towards the secular world we inhabit today.
