Launch of the Galway Holy Wells Audit

An exciting new heritage initiative began in County Galway in June 2020. Commissioned by the Heritage Office, Galway County Council, as an action of Galway County Heritage and Biodiversity Plan 2017 – 2022 and funded by Galway County Council and the Heritage Council, the project is an audit of holy wells. The aim is to collect and collate information about each and every holy well in the County, so that it can be shared for use in community projects and recorded for future generations. The data collected will include location, infrastructure, physical condition, access, protection status, ownership, archaeology, architecture, biodiversity, traditions, folklore, oral heritage and customs associated with and connected to the holy wells.
