We pass through levels of existence and carry different dimensions within us. He describes how the human being begins from inanimate substance, then vegetative life, then animal life, and finally reaches true humanity through intellect, moral perception, and reason. This is not just biology. It is a map of what man is and what he is meant to become. He explains that within us are competing powers. There is the appetitive side that seeks food, lust, comfort, conquest, and immediate pleasure. Then there is the rational side that seeks truth, knowledge, refinement, virtue, and higher purpose. Human life becomes a struggle between these forces. The lower self wants quick satisfaction. The intellect calls toward discipline, wisdom, and what benefits us in the long run. He points out that sensual pleasures are easier, faster, and more familiar. They are immediate. Intellectual and spiritual pleasures require effort, discipline, patience, and struggle. That is why most people naturally drift toward what is easy and delay what is noble. This is why people often know what is right, yet still choose what harms them. Hamza Yusuf also explains that reason can perceive certain moral truths. It can know that honesty is better than theft, knowledge better than ignorance, justice better than ظلم, and murder worse than mercy. But reason has limits. It cannot independently know all divine rulings, nor can it know the unseen consequences, eternal reward, or punishment without revelation. He then ties this to the state of the modern world. A society ruled by appetite, debt, impulse, comfort, and short term thinking becomes selfish and unstable. Individuals do the same. They push difficulty away, chase immediate pleasure, and leave the consequences for later. In contrast, the truly intelligent person disciplines the self, resists impulse, and works for what comes after death. He closes by emphasizing that good deeds should still be done even when intentions are mixed. Purity is fought for in the process. One should not wait for perfect sincerity before acting.
