Prof. Oussama Khatib | Shaping the Future of Human-Robot Collaboration | Turkish Robotics Conference

In his talk, “Shaping the Future of Human-Robot Collaboration,” Prof. Oussama Khatib of Stanford University explores how robotics can extend human capabilities in hazardous, remote, and otherwise inaccessible environments. By physically distancing humans from danger while preserving their skills, intuition, and experience in guiding robotic systems, human-robot collaboration can redefine the future of work and remote operations. A central example is OceanOneK, a state-of-the-art robotic diver developed at Stanford. Equipped with advanced autonomous capabilities for physical interaction and a sophisticated haptic and stereovision interface, OceanOneK enables human experts to intuitively control and collaborate with the robot in real time. Its archaeological expeditions in the Mediterranean demonstrate how human cognition and robotic precision can unlock new possibilities for exploration and intervention at extreme depths. From accessing natural resources and delivering medical care in remote regions to maintaining distant infrastructure and supporting disaster response, Prof. Khatib illustrates how robotics is expanding what humans can achieve underwater, underground, on mountains, and in space.
