The Meta-Crisis of Meaning in Modern Society: A Discussion with Layman Pascal

The Ladder: Journeys in Platonic Mysticism, Episode 29 In this episode, Danny welcomes Layman Pascal, an integralist philosopher and podcaster. He is a leading voice in contemporary discussions of metamodern spirituality, metashamanics, and the metaphysics of adjacency. Their conversation begins from the strangeness of the present: accelerating technologies, artificial intelligence, ecological instability, cultural fragmentation, and the collapse of inherited structures of meaning. Pascal argues that this moment requires more than the familiar modern image of the philosopher. It calls for a renewed encounter with philosophy’s older ancestor: the shaman, witch, or “organic weirdness worker” capable of inhabiting uncertainty without fleeing the world. Nietzsche becomes a central exemplar, a prophet of nihilism who reintroduces a shamanic and Dionysian impulse into Western philosophy, demanding that we create values without pretending that our creations are final. From there, Danny and Layman explore sincere irony: the ability to participate wholeheartedly while retaining the distance needed to question, recontextualize, and even laugh at one’s own commitments. The conversation then turns from diagnosis to practice. If the self is not a fixed unity but a community of competing impulses, how can we cultivate dialogue among its parts rather than suppressing their conflict? Pascal draws connections among Socrates, Nietzsche, and Gurdjieff, each of whom treats inner plurality, dialogue, and disciplined self-observation as conditions of transformation. The discussion ranges through digital culture’s possible return to conversational knowledge, the reintegration of structural and fluid—or conventionally masculine and feminine—forms of sense-making, and antifragility as the capacity to grow through tension rather than merely endure it. Pascal offers concrete psychotechnologies: remain somatically present, learn to tolerate inner friction, bring mind, heart, and body to bear on the same problem, and approach even disturbing figures as opportunities to understand neglected possibilities within oneself. The episode closes with advice for younger listeners—and with childhood games of dodging rocks, renaming objects in midair, and “fencing” unexpected bird behavior, all expressions of the same philosophical freedom: loosening what we think things are so that another relationship with the world can become possible.
