And what's not to like? Extended improvisations, airborne saxophone solos, pulsating grooves. One of Coltrane's acolytes from afar is Austrian saxophonist Muriel Grossmann, who has spent more than 20 years celebrating his vision with aptly titled albums like Awakening, Reverence and Devotion. And like Coltrane she understands that this level of exploration requires deep communication among players so with her for this nearly hour-long September 2024 concert at La Philharmonie de Paris' Grande Salle Pierre Boulez, part of the Jazz à la Villette Festival, are established partners: guitarist Radomir Milojković, absorbing the innovations of Tisziji Muñoz, has been with Grossmann almost since the beginning of her musical journey while Hammond organ player Abel Boquera and drummer Uroš Stamenković are of more recent vintage. The group, comprising three countries, demonstrates the far reach of America's classical music. Grossmann makes this heady style very much her own through the unusual instrumentation, organ adding a gospelly touch, mixing Coltrane with both Jimmy Smith and Willis "Gator" Jackson. She moves from tenor to soprano to alto for different textures, with a bevy of percussion instruments at her disposal during others’ solos for even more ritualism. The four originals are not long… they are longitudinal.
