Yongmun Catholic Church: Faith Enduring Beyond the Era of Persecution | Planning / Production | Public Relations Bureau, Diocese of Suwon | Filming / Editing / Narration | The Pilgrim Man (Peter Lee Min-ho) | Text (Commentary) | Andrew Lee Seon-gyu Upon entering the entrance of Yongmun-myeon, the exotic appearance of Yongmun Catholic Church, standing atop two golden domes, immediately catches the eye. Situated at the highest point in the village and overlooking Yongmun Village, the church's magnificent presence serves as a representative symbol of Yongmun-myeon in itself. Established in 1908, Yongmun Catholic Church is a historic pilgrimage site with a long history spanning over 110 years. If you go around to the back of the church, you will come across a rustic earthenware wall silently guarding a corner of the church. Inscribed on this earthenware wall are the names of the numerous chapels that have been under the jurisdiction of the Yongmun Parish since the 1900s. Onggi symbolizes the "steadfast faith" that our ancestors of faith never let go of, even as they hid in the deep valleys of Mt. Yongmun during times of persecution and sustained their livelihood by firing and selling pottery. In front of the Onggi Wall stands a meticulously tended Marian Garden, and connected to it at the back is the Grotto of the Virgin Mary, a recreation of the ancestors' pottery kiln site. A cozy prayer room is provided here for pilgrims to meditate in quiet contemplation. When warm sunlight streams through a small window and illuminates the Virgin Mary, it becomes a mysterious and sacred space for prayer where pilgrims ask for her intercession. A beautiful Stations of the Cross line the mountain behind the Onggi Wall. A fairly steep slope begins right at the entrance of the path, and gazing at the large crucifix at the top of the hill brings to mind the suffering of Golgotha. The prayer concludes after completing a full loop around the mountain ridge, where the Stations of the Cross begin about halfway up the hill. Upon entering the Way of the Cross, the winding path leading into a dense forest serves as a comforting sanctuary, offering a resting place even amidst the scorching summer sun. Particularly alongside this tranquil trail, rustic yet elegant roof tiles are lined up, adding to the path's beauty. These tiles were collected over a long period by a believer who passed away in an unfortunate accident and were donated by his family. This tiled path, imbued with someone's sorrow and longing, has become the most beautiful path of prayer in the world, embracing love and faith. In this way, the poignant and beautiful stories of the believers and the noble spirit of the ancestors of faith are embedded throughout Yongmun Catholic Church.
