Conmemoraciones - Felipe Ángeles, el gran artillero de la Revolución (26/11/2023)
Felipe Ángeles was one of the most important generals of the Mexican Revolution. He is, without a doubt, one of the greatest glories of the Military College, the institution where he trained, graduated, and acquired the values of honesty and integrity that characterized him for the rest of his life. He is one of the key figures in Mexican history, says historian Felipe Ávila. Hidalgo native Felipe Ángeles also studied artillery and completed military training in France. Upon his return to Mexico, Madero asked him to lead what had been his school, the Military College, and shortly afterward sent him to Morelos to fight the Zapatistas, where he demonstrated great skill, sensitivity, and moderation in dealing with that rebel group and the civilian population. After Victoriano Huerta's military coup and Madero's assassination, Ángeles was sent back to Europe, as he had been very close to the president, but he soon returned and joined the constitutionalist movement, which was already fighting the usurper. Venustiano Carranza sent him to join the Northern Division, to fight on the front lines under Pancho Villa, and the meeting of these two talents proved very fortunate. Ángeles participated in various battles, most notably the Capture of Zacatecas, which led to Huerta's defeat and his flight from the country. After the Convention of Aguascalientes, the most representative assembly of the Mexican Revolution (to which the Zapatistas were invited for the first time, thanks to Felipe), Ángeles turned against Carranza. But when the First Chief defeated Villa, Felipe retreated to the United States. There, he joined the "Mexican Liberal Alliance," which sought to return to Mexico to continue fighting Carranza and oust him from power. Felipe Ángeles gradually leaned toward a type of humanitarian socialism, which was the political doctrine that would characterize him during the last stages of his life. Ángeles returned to Mexico in late 1918, stayed with Villa again for six months, and persuaded him to spare the lives of a large number of Carrancista prisoners. But when he ordered the killing of General Maclovio Herrera's relatives, Ángeles separated from him and went into the mountains. In the Chihuahua mountains, Felipe Ángeles was arrested by Carrancistas who had previously been Villistas. Although he had left the army, he was subjected to an Extraordinary Court Martial, which many considered a farce, and which sentenced him to be shot in the city of Chihuahua on November 26, 1919. Thus came to an end one of the most brilliant careers of an extraordinary figure, central to understanding the Mexican Revolution.
