Title (ES): Transgresión Digital en América Latina: Perspectivas y Proyecciones desde Cuba Title (EN): Digital Transgression in Latin America: Perspectives and Projections from Cuba Description: Recorded on Monday, 1 June 2026, in Ghent, this session of the Human Rights in Context Talking Series focused on human rights, digital violence, and non-discrimination in Latin America. The event opens with introductory remarks by Prof Dr Clara Burbano Herrera, Director of Human Rights in Context, Ghent University. Our guest speakers, Dr Maylen Villamañan Alba, Dr Lisandra Díaz de la Paz, Dr Evelyn Fernández Castillo, and Dr Marena de la C. Hernández Lugo, present the lecture “Transgresión digital en América Latina: perspectivas y proyecciones desde Cuba”. The presentation forms part of the project “CYBERSAFE: Abordaje de los comportamientos transgresivos en línea en la comunidad universitaria cubana: refuerzo de las políticas institucionales en favor de la no violencia y la no discriminación en los espacios digitales”. Developed within the framework of the Global Mind project of the VUB and UCLV, this initiative is based on collaboration between the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Universidad Central «Marta Abreu» de Las Villas in Cuba. The session explored digital transgression in university contexts through empirical, psychological and technological perspectives. The speakers presented ongoing research on the measurement of online transgressive behaviours among Cuban university students, the design of evidence-based responses for victims, and the development of digital tools for detecting hate speech, cyberbullying, grooming, doxing and other forms of online violence in Spanish-speaking environments. Drawing on their interdisciplinary expertise in psychology, sociology, criminology, computer science, education, gender studies, university welfare, and artificial intelligence, the speakers offer a situated and multidisciplinary perspective on the challenges posed by digital violence in Latin America.
