Canton of Vaud The canton of Vaud, is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of ten districts and its capital city is Lausanne. Its flag bears the motto "Liberté et patrie" on a white-green background. Vaud is the third largest canton of the country by population and fourth by size. It is located in Romandy, the French-speaking western part of the country; and borders the canton of Neuchâtel to the north, the cantons of Fribourg and Bern to the east, the canton of Valais to the south, the canton of Geneva to the south-west and France to the west. The geography of the canton includes all three natural regions of Switzerland: the Jura Mountains, the Swiss Plateau and the (Swiss) Alps. It also includes some of the largest lakes of the country: Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel. It is a major tourist destination, renowned for its landscapes and gastronomy. The largest city is Lausanne, followed by Yverdon-les-Bains and Montreux. As of 2020 the canton has a population of 814,762. It is one of the four cantons where French is the sole official language. Formerly a Bernese bailiwick, Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation as an independent canton in 1803. Château-d'Oex It is a municipality in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is in the district of Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut. During the late Paleolithic and Mesolithic (9500 BC to at least 6000 BC) caves around Château-d'Œx served as a seasonal settlement. Bronze Age knives indicate that there was a settlement during that era as well. Many of the local names (combe = valley, joeur = forest, man= rock) and the local dialect are the only traces of a Celtic settlement in the area. The lack of iron ore and the sparseness of the soil probably prevented the romanization of lowland valleys. During the Gallo-Roman era, the region may have been only sparsely populated. By the 10th century, the Alamannic settlements had only reached Le Vanel but then spread even higher and reached the pastures in L'Étivaz in the southern part of the municipality. The valley was known as the high Gau or Ogo. The name may have come from the word for Ox or be a form of Äesch, (or ash). Pays-d'Enhaut It is a district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. The seat of the district is the town of Château-d'Œx. It is a beautiful area of Switzerland located between Lausanne and Interlaken. It borders the Swiss-German Saanenland and the famous resort of Gstaad. The region is T-shaped, comprising two valleys. The main valley runs from the village of La Tine in the direction of Gruyères and Bulle to Rougemont, continuing in the direction of Saanen and Gstaad. The secondary valley runs south from Château-d'Œx to the villages of Etivaz and La Lecherette in the direction of Les Mosses (Col-des-Mosses) and Aigle, continuing to the canton of Valais. It benefits from idyllic summers with beautiful hikes and walks possible. Exhilarating winter skiing is possible in several locations, especially near Rougemont and Château-d'Œx. The Rougemont ski location is linked by a piste that runs into the Gstaad network of ski runs. It is the historical center of the Enhaut dialect group of the Franco-Provençal language. French is spoken in the district, as well. Three municipalities are located within the district: Château-d'Œx, Rossinière, and Rougemont. A bird appears in the coat of arms and flag of each municipality. Rougemont It is a municipality in the Pays-d'Enhaut of the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Canton of Bern The canton of Bern or Berne is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. Its capital city, Bern, is also the de facto capital of Switzerland.
