JUNE 2026 BEST SIGHTINGS
June 2026 brought an exciting wave of marine migrations to San Diego, offering visitors remarkable opportunities to witness some of the ocean’s most iconic species. Every year, people travel from around the globe hoping to see the blue whale—the largest animal ever known to exist—and this season delivered unforgettable encounters. Blue whales can reach lengths of nearly 100 feet and migrate thousands of miles along the Pacific coast, following dense patches of krill that sustain their enormous size. Their presence is always a highlight, and this June offered several memorable sightings. In addition to blue whales, we observed an impressive variety of other species. Humpback whales appeared more frequently than usual for early summer, delighting guests with their energetic surface behaviors. Known for their haunting, complex songs that can travel for miles underwater, humpbacks are among the most expressive and acrobatic of the baleen whales. We also encountered fin whales—the second-largest whale species—famous for their sleek bodies and surprising speed, sometimes reaching up to 20 miles per hour. Smaller but equally fascinating minke whales made appearances as well, recognizable by their quick surfacing and subtle blows. The excitement didn’t stop with whales. Multiple species of dolphins joined the show, including offshore bottlenose dolphins, which visited often and displayed their impressive acrobatic skills. Offshore bottlenose dolphins tend to be larger than their coastal relatives and are known for dramatic breaching, bow-riding, and high-speed surfacing behavior. Their playful energy added a lively dynamic to many of our trips. Throughout the month, our skilled naturalist captured stunning photographs documenting these encounters. These images not only showcase the beauty of the animals but also help researchers better understand migration patterns, population health, and behavioral changes over time. June 2026 was a truly special month on the water, filled with extraordinary wildlife and unforgettable moments. We hope you enjoy these highlights, and we look forward to welcoming you aboard soon.
