Otaki To Carterton Hike via Tararua Peaks EXTENDED

Hike from Otaki Forks to Mangatarere Valley Road End, Feb 2025 Always wanted to try a crossing of the Tararuas, and the weather was perfect for the days we had planned (we'd probably only do mid-Tararua's in perfect weather!). Hardly saw anyone - about two people on the track and three at each hut. Due to a slip at Otaki Gorge being worked on, we had to take the emergency access track which was steep and added an extra two hours (not shown here). First day was tough on the legs. But crystal clear views all directions and sunset behind the South Island from Kime Hut were spectacular. Kime hut itself was excellent. Second day walk was stunning across the tops, the video doesn't do the scenery justice. The precarious path before and on the peaks was really cool, and didn't feel dangerous (I bet it would in the wind or rain though). The track was easier to follow than our previous trip over Winchcombe to Hector. Maungahuka hut has an amazing spot. Third day was longest and on the tougher side with the re-climb back up to cone ridge. Waiohine dip was brisk, as usual, but welcome. Totara Flats Hut very high quality. Fourth day was thankfully shorter, Totara Flats picturesque as usual. Sayer hut had character! The climb over to Mangatarere was decent as expected.
