Kabir Quotes - These Religions Speak of the Same God | Meditations from the Bijak and Adi Granth

Welcome to our exploration of the profound teachings of Kabir (also spelled Kabeer). Born in 1440 in the city of Varanasi, India, Kabir was raised in a Muslim household. However, his spiritual journey transcended the boundaries of religion as he pursued a path steeped in the love of God. His teachings stressed the unifying nature of the divine, a profound message that holds relevance even today: "The Hindu says Rama’s dear to him, The Muslim says it’s Rahim. They go to war and kill each other – No one knows the secret of things." This video delves into Kabir's influence on all of the major spiritual traditions' particularly, Hinduism, Sufism, and Sikhism. Despite being raised a Muslim, Kabir was deeply influenced by Hindu philosophy and practices. His poetry, known as Kabir's Dohe, are treasured and revered in Sikhism, and are integral to the Guru Granth Sahib, the primary scripture of Sikhism. Kabir, however, was an advocate for spiritual liberation that transcended rituals and orthodoxy. He believed in the omnipresence of the divine, urging us to look inward to find it: "The Lord is in me, The Lord is in you, As life is in every seed. O servant! Put false pride away, And seek for Him within you." He also emphasized the limitations of religious scriptures and rituals: "There is nothing but water at the holy bathing places, and I know that they are useless, for I bathed in them. The images are all lifeless, they cannot speak - I know, for I have cried aloud to them." Kabir's teachings revolved around the oneness of the divine, which he believed was the same for all religions: "You yourself are a mosque with ten doors. Make your mind the Mecca, your body the Kaaba – your Self itself is the Supreme Master. In the name of Allah [God], sacrifice your anger, error, impurity. The Lord of the Hindus and the Muslims [lit. Turks] Is one and the same." His advice encouraged patience and trust in the divine's all-encompassing care: "Why so impatient, my heart? He who watches over birds, beasts, and insects, he who cared for you while you were still in your mother’s womb, shall He not care for you now that you are come forth?" Through this exploration of Kabir's wisdom and teachings, we invite you to contemplate the universal and timeless message of divine love and unity that pervades his poetry. His words continue to guide millions on their spiritual journey, inviting introspection, self-realization, and the understanding of the oneness of all existence.
