W126 W124 W123 Ignition Key Won't Turn? Important Warning & DIY Replacement Guide

Bad news when the ignition key on your W126 Benz will not turn. Do not lubricate the mechanism under any circumstances. Here is how to install a new ignition lock. In this technical advisory from Stray Benzes, Ralf addresses a critical maintenance issue for Mercedes-Benz W126 owners: the "sticky" ignition key. He explains the mechanical risks of ignoring a struggling ignition lock and demonstrates how to replace the tumbler assembly before it fails completely, which can turn a $30 DIY job into a $500+ nightmare. Video Indexing (Chapters) [00:00] Introduction: The danger of a sticking W126 ignition key. [01:18] The Mechanism: Understanding the tumbler, the groove, and the release hole. [02:13] Lubrication Warning: Why you should never use WD-40 in your ignition. [02:58] Last-Ditch Efforts: Tips for getting a stuck key to turn one final time. [03:36] The Financial Risk: Why a total lock-up costs $500+ in labor and parts. [04:11] Replacement Kits: Overview of the MercedesSource tumbler and tool kit. [04:40] Installation: Using the release tool to swap the tumbler assembly. [06:14] Reassembly: Finalizing the steering lock and ignition switch. Video Summary Ralf stresses that if your ignition key begins to feel "sticky" or resistant, you must stop driving the car and replace the lock tumbler immediately while the key can still be turned to the "position one" alignment. If the key locks permanently in the "off" position, the security mechanisms prevent the tumbler from being removed, necessitating the destruction of the steering lock assembly and significant dashboard disassembly. Key Technical Highlights: The Alignment Rule: To remove the tumbler, the key must be turned so that the internal groove lines up with a small hole in the housing. Only in this position can a specialized thin metal tool be inserted to retract the locking pin. Lubricant Danger: Ralf warns against using WD-40 or other liquid oils, as they can gum up the delicate internal wafers and make the lock-up permanent. If lubrication is absolutely necessary, only use a small amount of graphite powder. Worn Keys: Often, the problem is a combination of a worn tumbler and a worn-down key. As a last-ditch effort to get the lock to turn one last time, Ralf suggests ordering a factory-fresh key from a dealership based on the VIN. Removal "Hack": If the key is stubborn, you may need to use pliers to gently wiggle the key for one final turn to reach the release alignment. Once turned, do not turn it back until the repair is finished. The Fix: Ralf recommends the $30 replacement kit from MercedesSource, which includes a new tumbler, two keys, a specialized release tool, and assembly grease. Final Installation: When installing the new tumbler, ensure the "nut" (the outer sleeve) is tightened only by hand. If it requires pliers, the assembly is likely misaligned.
