This city is said to be the birthplace of Upper Egypt and is considered to be the gateway to Nubia, which is not very far away. It is also known for its pink granite which is found in the surrounding mountains and which was once used to build statues and obelisks. At the exit of the station (on the left) you arrive directly in Saad Zaghloul street which is topped by wooden porticos and which crosses a huge market area and which leads to the souks (Sharia el Souk) Don't hesitate to walk the small perpendicular streets, you will find some entrances to souks and many outdoor markets, with canvases hung between the buildings to protect you from the sun There is a wonderful atmosphere there. There is another very pleasant pedestrian street with a lot of shops, it is Al Sayeda Nafisa Street. You can venture into the other streets of the city The buildings are relatively dilapidated and the ground is dirt The major arteries are very dense in terms of traffic and therefore very noisy. You can also take a walk on the corniche, along the Nile, the calm of the feluccas (sailing boats) navigating the river contrasts with the hustle and bustle and incessant honking of the 4-lane road right next to it. The Unfinished Obelisk In the heart of the city there is an old granite quarry in which there is an unfinished obelisk. In fact, the workers, during construction, noticed the poor quality of the block because of cracks that appeared, so they left it on site in this state. It is claimed that once completed it would have measured 40 meters high and weighed nearly 10 tonnes, making it the largest obelisk ever built. Entrance costs 200LE (6€) (note payment by credit card only like almost all other monuments in Egypt) I hesitated to do it for a long time and in the end I don’t regret it because it’s still very impressive. Try to gain some height to see it better and even go to the other side (at its base) to get a better idea of ​​its scale. If you don't have time to go, it doesn't matter.
