A constâcia que edifica
Persistence builds the soul like a great building is erected: brick by brick, effort by effort, day after day. We take care of our house, our clothes, and our bodies because we desire healthy environments, but there is an even deeper dwelling: the inner life, where God desires to dwell. Jesus speaks of the house built on the rock, Saint Paul affirms that we are God's building, Saint Augustine discovers the Lord within himself, Saint Gregory the Great praises Saint Benedict for dwelling within himself, and Saint Teresa presents the soul as an inner castle. The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona spans generations under construction, just as the great works of our lives require patience, humility, and faithfulness in small things. Great results are born from seemingly insignificant tasks. A bricklayer lays hundreds of bricks a day, and a coach like Bill Walsh transformed the San Francisco 49ers by taking care of the details, trusting that the score would be a consequence of a well-lived process. Faced with a difficult competition, a change of habits, growth in prayer, or the building of a happy family, we don't need to carry the entire work at once. Nehemiah asked each family to rebuild only the section of the wall in front of their own house. Similarly, the world is transformed from the bottom up when ordinary people lovingly care for the portion of history that God has placed in their hands. Building also requires defending. The workers of Jerusalem raised the wall with one hand and held their swords with the other, because every valuable work needs to be protected. Prayer nourishes the inner life, while mortification helps us say no to what distances us from true good. Constancy consists not only in choosing beautiful possibilities, but also in closing the doors to that which destroys the chosen direction. Mastering attention involves learning to endure discomfort, resisting immediacy, and not turning technology into an excuse. Before decorating a room, it is necessary to raise firm walls; before advancing through the dwellings of the inner castle, it is necessary to combat the sin that tries to expel God from within us. To remain on the path, it is necessary to keep the complete project before our eyes. Jimmer Fredette kept a written commitment on the wall to his dream of reaching the NBA, and this reminder kept him training when his enthusiasm waned. We too need to know where we are going, for distraction only exists when there is an abandoned direction. The presence of God restores unity to our occupations, lifts the head bowed over screens, and draws the heart back to Christ. The secret of perseverance is love: whoever falls in love does not abandon, and whoever decides not to abandon learns to love even more. The most important work in history was not a wall nor a cathedral, but the home of Nazareth, where Our Lady prepared a house for the Word to dwell among men. Let us ask her to transform our soul into a firm, beautiful, and faithful dwelling place, where God may remain forever. • Bible: 1 Corinthians 3:9; Nehemiah 4:17; John 12:32; Luke 21:28 • Gospels: house built on the rock; Good Shepherd; well of Sychar; Incarnation of the Word • Saint Josemaría Escrivá: The Way, points 823 and 999 • Saint Augustine: experience of the search for God within the soul • Saint Gregory the Great: description of Saint Benedict, “he dwelt with himself” • Saint Teresa of Jesus: Interior Castle • Imitation of Christ • The Indistractable Book, by Nir Eyal • Sports example: Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers • Sports example: Jimmer Fredette and his commitment to reaching the NBA • Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, in Barcelona • Cologne Cathedral • Reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem by Nehemiah • Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto and the home of Nazareth • Pontifical document cited in the meditation: Magnifica Humanitas
