Rabbit Kekai's Influence on Joe Quigg 1947
Joe Quigg either kept a journal of his visit to Hawaii in 1947 or sent these papers as letters to a friend. I do not know the original source. These writings were posted at the beach paddle out service for Rabbit Kekai and indicate an enormous amount of respect between Joe Quigg and Rabbit Kekai. I only know that this reveals an amazing window into the shortboard era starting in the 1940s and possibly even skegless surfing. We have seen amazing feats of surfing skill performed on modern alaia surfboards, but Joe Quigg seems to indicate that, at least to him, Rabbit Kekai was the first pioneer of the shortboard era.
