Olivia Blackshire: Recent Graduate and Public Historian on the Rise
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the spotlight series here on the channel. Today, we have with us our first historian spotlight feature with Olivia Blackshire. As a recent first-gen graduate of the College of William & Mary, Olivia Blackshire strives to make history relevant and respected in the lives of those around her, particularly younger audiences. Olivia believes history isn't old-fashioned or stuck in the past. It is living and active, shaping the cultural current of everything we know and love (or anything but). Whether it's an event, essay, video, interview, or installation, her passion explores new, creative, and engaging experiences that make that very idea appreciated. Coming with a focus on the Early American and African American, Olivia investigates history and culture on a public display as a research assistant for the Fayetteville History Museum. University helped her recognize public history's role as the front line for national and local perceptions of heritage and cultural memory. She is learning the substance of trust building in descendant and community engagement, and a BUNCH of lessons within the field invite her to understand interdisciplinary study as an invaluable resource. But most of all, Olivia revels in the art of asking questions and having the willingness to listen. This curiosity, once fueling her undergraduate studies, now inspires her to share her mission with the world, wherever that takes her.
