After finishing each chapter you get a beautiful hand-drawn (or stylized 2D) animated short. These are collectively known as the “Six Roots” animations. One morning he wakes up to find the fox has turned into a beautiful woman. They fall in love, marry, have children and grandchildren, and live in luxury. One day the old scholar returns home to a bloodbath, his family is dead and his wife has revealed her true half-fox demon form while eating a corpse. He then wakes up (it was a dream/vision) and, out of lingering fear, kills the actual white fox and wears its fur as a scarf.
