Postcard from Tomorrow | Helen Arvelle – Every Little Feeling (1989, Full Music Album)

Helen Arvelle was a British pop singer from the south coast of England whose brief recording career spanned the late 1980s and early 1990s. She was born in the spring of 1968 in Seaford, a small seaside town in East Sussex. Before embarking on her solo career, she trained as a dancer, entered amateur singing competitions, appeared in summer club shows, and recorded jingles for local radio, demo vocals and backing vocals. The surname Arvelle was created in the studio, while the singer’s real family name was never made public. In 1988, Helen met producer Daniel “Danny” Mercer, composer Julian Pike and vocal producer Louise Hartwell of Marlowe Street Productions. Together they recorded Every Little Feeling, which was released in the autumn of 1989 by the small London label Starbridge Records. The initial pressing was limited to just over 1,000 vinyl copies and around 2,000 cassettes. A small number of cassettes were also supplied to distributors in the Netherlands, Belgium, West Germany and Scandinavia. The album blended British bubblegum dance-pop, a lighter strain of Hi-NRG, synthpop and polished studio disco-pop, combining crisp drum machines, FM bass, sparkling synth arpeggios, handclaps, brief guitar accents and airy female backing vocals. Helen’s high, clear voice, precise English diction and the gentle smile in her delivery created a consistent portrait of a young pop heroine who was slightly shy but gradually growing in confidence. The first single received modest regional radio airplay and appeared on several club playlists, although no major promotional campaign followed. Two further songs were released after the album sessions had ended: the more nocturnal and mature “Too Close to Midnight” and the dreamy, urban “Lucky in the City Lights”. Neither appeared on the original album, but both suggested the direction in which Helen’s music might have developed. Work on a second album came to an end because of Starbridge Records’ financial difficulties and disagreements within the production team. Helen withdrew from public life in the early 1990s, leaving behind one album, several rare singles and a small collection of promotional photographs. Over time, Every Little Feeling acquired a cult reputation among collectors as a forgotten example of late-1980s British commercial pop. With the kind permission and invaluable assistance of those involved in the original release, our channel is pleased to present this restored and expanded edition of the album, featuring the ten tracks from the original release together with two non-album singles. Although Helen did not take part in preparing this edition or give an extended interview, she sent word through former colleagues that she remembers the songs with great affection and is pleased that the recordings have found an audience again, while preferring to maintain her privacy.
