The Artist’s Diary: Painting on a Massive Scale

Winter has arrived in the UK - cold, crisp, sunny days and long evenings. In the studio things are warming up, however. After last week’s experiments with bigger canvases, I decided to stop easing myself in and… just go HUGE. This episode of The Artist’s Diary follows me as I take my ideas onto the biggest canvases I’ve worked on so far — and follows some of the challenges that come with scaling up. From colour mixing to composition to managing the sheer physicality of giant work, it’s been a wild mix of excitement, resistance, breakthroughs, and total chaos. Along the way, there’s a bit of everything: some outbuilding renovations, a few beautiful country walks, plenty of second-guessing, and of course, some Riley moments sprinkled throughout. This video is really about the artist’s process — learning to get stuck in, figuring things out as you go, and welcoming the inevitable failures like old friends.
