I stayed in a local farmhouse deep in rural Bhutan to experience authentic village life. But during the trip, a sudden illness sent me to a mountain hospital for emergency treatment. I had a really bad cold the past couple of days, and today I finally feel slightly alive again… But since I was still feeling pretty awful, they took me to the hospital. Punakha is considered a small city, and since we were in a mountainous area, I honestly expected the “hospital” to be very basic—or maybe not even much of a hospital at all. Turns out, the facilities and equipment completely exceeded my expectations! Bhutan truly cares about the well-being of its people. I was told that hospitals across different regions maintain a solid standard, and locals receive medical treatment for free. Even as a foreigner, my consultation and medication didn’t cost anything. A few days later, after getting injured, I went to the ER in another, more remote city and even had X-rays done—also completely free!
