The generator provides the electricity and the motor drives the bus. It is a very efficient system. The engine is always at optimum revs and it sounds like a CVT. An actual CVT is not possible on buses as the belt has to take the entire force of the engine and would snap under the load. The rival to BAE is the horrid Volvo system which is not a diesel electric despite what they say. The BAE system is the best hybrid system there is. It has a great engine sound which only revs when actually needed, plus an awesome motor sound which sounds like a train. The original BAE system came in 2008, it has great motor sound and revs right up when accelerating once the batteries are empty. The improved version came in 2012 which has engine start/stop plus other improvements, and the engine provides power at the exact right moment and it revs very nicely. The New BAE came in 2014 which is similar to the improved version but conforms to Euro 6, the engine sounds less powerful but more efficient and the motor sound is awesome.
