California Removed Its Largest Dam and River Exploded Back to Life — Before/After Doesn't Look Real

The Klamath River was dead. Four hydroelectric dams built between 1918 and 1962 blocked one of California's most powerful rivers for over 100 years, collapsing salmon populations to less than 5% of their historical levels, poisoning the water with toxic algae blooms, and flooding the ancestral lands of Indigenous tribes who had depended on this river for thousands of years. Then, in the largest dam removal project in world history, all four dams came down — and what happened next defied every scientific model ever built. In this video, we cover the full story of the Klamath River dam removal and ecological restoration — from the century of destruction caused by the Iron Gate, Copco 1, Copco 2, and J.C. Boyle dams, to the 20-year fight led by the Yurok, Karuk, and Shasta tribes to restore the river, to the shocking speed of nature's recovery once the dams were finally removed in 2023 and 2024. Within just 10 days of the final dam removal, over 6,000 Chinook salmon were already migrating upstream. Within months, toxic algae dropped from 58% of water samples exceeding public health limits to 82% completely undetectable. Wildflowers and California poppies bloomed across 2,200 acres of land that had been a toxic reservoir. Bald eagles, otters, and osprey returned. The river found its ancient channel — preserved perfectly under a century of sediment — and came back to life faster than anyone expected. This is the story of river restoration, rewilding, and ecological recovery at a scale never attempted before. It is also the story of Indigenous land stewardship, conservation, and what happens when a community refuses to give up on a river for 20 years while governments and corporations look the other way. Key topics covered in this video: Klamath River restoration, largest dam removal in history, California river recovery, Chinook salmon habitat, toxic algae removal, Yurok tribe conservation, river rewilding, before and after dam removal, nature recovery, ecosystem restoration, and what happens when you remove a dam.
