Hi! I'm Rodrigo Leão, a professor, and on this channel we talk about anything, as long as we have a good book! CORRECTION: I'm citing Jorge Caldeira's book, História da Riqueza (History of Wealth), which is on the list. This week, Folha published its list of the best Brazilian non-fiction books of the 21st century, continuing the fiction list from last year. Two lists, more than one hundred judges, twenty-eight titles. And a homogeneity that says more about who chose them than about the books themselves. In this video, I discuss what was left out of these selections and why the absence matters. I take Torto Arado (Crooked Plow), by Itamar Vieira Junior, as a case for technical analysis, with Graciliano Ramos, Eça de Queirós, Vargas Llosa, and Machado de Assis serving as counterpoints, and Silvio Romero, Eagleton, and Aristotle anchoring the discussion in the critical tradition. This isn't a video about politics.
