Mukdahan's Giant BUDDHA

The “Big Buddha” in Mukdahan isn’t just a statue, it’s one of the most striking hilltop temple complexes in Thailand’s Isan region. It sits at Wat Roi Phra Putthabat Phu Manorom, overlooking the Mekong River and Laos. Next to the Buddha is a 120-meter-long Phayanak (Naga) winding through the trees; super dramatic and very Thai/Lao in symbolism. The Naga symbolizes water, protection, and connection to the river which is central to life in Isaan and Laos. Unlike many giant statues, this Buddha has multiple interior floors with stairs leading up to a rooftop viewpoint. It’s perched high on Phu Manorom hill, so the Buddha appears to rise above the forest canopy; which can be quite cinematic, especially at sunrise or sunset.
