Memoirs of a Militia Sergeant is Antofágica's first book of the year! Written by Manuel Antônio de Almeida and published in installments between 1852 and 1853, the work recounts the escapades of young Leonardo and life in Rio de Janeiro during the reign of Dom João VI. With simple language and great originality, Manuel inaugurates a new literary line in the country with this work: the rogue novel. The Antofágica edition features more than 50 illustrations by Manuela Navas. Composer and writer Nei Lopes, author of Dictionary of the Social History of Samba, writes an introduction about his personal journey not only with the book, but with the city of Rio de Janeiro. In the afterwords, Giovanna Dealtry, PhD in Letters from PUC-Rio and professor at the Institute of Letters of UERJ, constructs an overview of the narrative dynamics and the concept of roguery, and writer Sérgio Rodrigues discusses the eternal youthfulness of Memoirs of a Militia Sergeant. Gabriela Mayer, journalist and literary critic, offers us an essay on the correlations between literature and journalism, the primary profession of Manuel Antônio de Almeida.
