Otto and Eivin Attempt A Cattle drive Across Alaska
Every year of my life we've done a cattle drive. I haven't made it to every single one, but they happen every year — and this year the whole crew showed up. This was Jade and Leo's first time, my niece and nephew, and watching the kids find their place in it was the best part. We let the cows out slow, built a fence out of an excavator bucket and an old trailer (because with livestock, looking solid is 90% of the job), and pushed them down in stages so they wouldn't tear up the meadow. Then it was off to the beach, up over the switchbacks, into the Fox Creek corral for the night, and finally across the rivers to where they'll graze all summer at the head of the bay. My dad's been making this trip for about 63 years. He started when he was eight — no horse, just running 30 miles one way because only the boss got to ride. That's people from a different time right there. There was a bull with a bit of a death wish, an antsy mare named Violet (nicknamed "Violence," which is funny because she really isn't), and a hard lesson about never leaving your horse unattended… ask my dad about that one. We've been filming cattle drives for almost 15 years now, and you still can't capture the whole thing on camera — the cold hands, the rain in your face, the wildness of that country. But we did our best to bring you along. This one was a little different, and we had a ton of fun making it.
