Descifrar el código secreto del envejecimiento | DW Documental
Can aging be reversed or even eliminated? If we manage to unravel this secret of human biology, we could soon conquer related diseases such as cancer, dementia, and heart problems. The race to invent the magic pill is already underway. Scientists around the world are getting surprisingly close to humanity's age-old desire: to be immortal. The quest gained momentum with Luis Rosero Bixby's discovery of the "blue zone" in Costa Rica. The number of centenarians on the Nicoya Peninsula is striking. Here, humans have the highest life expectancy in the world. A healthy lifestyle contributes to this, as do longer telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. However, this field of research, in which María Blasco works in Madrid, covers only one of the many factors that control aging. The determining factor may lie in senescent cells. These "zombie cells" accumulate in our bodies with age, flooding them with alarm signals until they succumb to the pressure. That's at least what Manuel Serrano believes in Barcelona. A multi-billion dollar business opportunity is already knocking impatiently on the doors of laboratories. Whoever brings the pill to market first will strike it rich. That's why, in Hong Kong, investors are constantly pouring money into startups. The American tech giants, the "Big Tech," are already fighting over the world's best scientists. And Alex Zhavoronkov also wants a piece of the pie; the entrepreneur has received $255 million from investors to research aging biomarkers with the help of artificial intelligence. And while the visions of some pioneers vanish like soap bubbles, others are already introducing dubious products to the market. However, their effectiveness can now be measured. The epigenetic clock invented by Steve Horvath can measure our biological age, regardless of our actual chronological age. Greg Fahy, in California, is able not only to slow down but even reverse aging thanks to his research on an organ called the thymus. His first human study shows that people who took certain drugs rejuvenated an average of two and a half years. Young biohackers like Nina Khera from Boston want everyone to benefit from this research. Along with friends, she is trying to develop a "biological clock for everyone." In the fervor of this relentless quest to conquer aging and related diseases, one has to wonder: to what extent should we manipulate nature? Will we increasingly overcrowd the planet? Mark Benecke, a forensic biologist from Cologne, knows it's already too late to ask that question. Also available in: English: • More life - Decoding the secret of aging |...
