Feel the onset of autumn on a trip to Hokkaido -- This time, we're heading to Sounkyo, known for having the earliest autumn foliage in Japan, for a leisurely three-day, two-night trip to Hokkaido. In this first part, we'll focus on our travels from Haneda Airport to Sapporo and the Hokkaido cuisine we sampled along the way. At Haneda Airport, we took advantage of the benefits of my JGC card and headed to the lounge. With a sandwich purchased at Tully's Coffee that morning, we enjoyed some relaxing time before departure. Arriving at New Chitose Airport for lunch, we went to the popular Ebisoba Ichigen. While there was a long line, the turnover was quick, and we were able to enter more smoothly than expected. The rich shrimp aroma and mellow soup were exquisite. For dessert, we had soft serve ice cream from Snow Brand Parlor. It was less crowded than Sapporo Agricultural College and Kinotoya, but the flavor was outstanding. The rich milk flavor and light aftertaste were impressive. Afterwards, we set off for Sapporo in a Nissan rental car. By using self-check-in, we can rent a car at one of the lowest rates on comparison sites, and with a little extra cash, we can also earn points that will save us money on future trips. We stayed at the Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Sapporo. Conveniently located near the station, the large public bath is equipped with ReFa hair dryers and shower heads. The breakfast buffet was also luxurious, so we ended up overeating. For dinner, we went to the famous Susukino restaurant Umi-mi Hachikyo. Their specialty, "Tsukko-meshi," is a spectacular dish that is quintessentially Hokkaido, with salmon roe piled up in a generous pile as the staff calls out.
