80 meters underwater—man-made? Korea has pierced through the sea that the world called "impossible." The Gadeok Undersea Tunnel was constructed by sinking concrete caissons weighing 50,000 tons to a depth of 48 meters. Korea, which had absolutely no experience with immersed tunnels, set five new world records on its first attempt. The 180-meter length of the immersed caisson, the 48-meter depth, and construction in the rough open sea were all world firsts. They succeeded in a project that even European construction companies with a 100-year history had expressed difficulty with, through a head-on breakthrough. The Boryeong Undersea Tunnel in South Chungcheong Province, which followed, is the world's fifth-largest tunnel, having pierced 80 meters underwater. While excavating 6.9 kilometers using a perilous blasting method, not a single drop of seawater leaked out. After 4,000 days and the deployment of 800,000 person-days, it transformed the lives of the island residents. From the Tongyeong undersea tunnel, the first in Asia, in 1932, to Gadeok, Incheon North Port, and Boryeong. Korea's mountainous and island-rich topography has ironically made it a world-leading powerhouse in tunnel construction. Now, that technology is being exported to Iraq, the first immersed tunnel in the Middle East. We are also heading toward an even bigger dream: the world's longest 73km Jeju undersea tunnel.
