In this first episode, you will meet the course instructors and be provided an overview of what is to come in the "Advanced US Coin Grading and Problem Coins" Aristotle's Vault Forum. Advanced U.S. Coin Grading and Problem Coins has been offered for many years at the ANA’s Summer Seminar. A continuum of classes are offered, starting with beginning grading and intermediate grading. Advanced grading is taken by those who have conquered the first two courses and are looking for a more challenging analysis of grading. The goal of the course is to explore more advanced grading principles, specifically focusing on circulated grades such as Mint State (MS) and expensive coins. Jeff Garrett is a rare coin dealer and author based in Lexington, Kentucky. Garrett’s journey in numismatics began at the age of eight, and his long-standing relationship with the ANA dates back to 1974, when he won a young numismatist scholarship. After spending his teenage years working in local coin shops, he launched his professional career in 1976. He has been teaching Advanced US Coin Grading and Problem Coins for over four years. Garrett draws on nearly 50 years of experience and a career built on his specialized talent for grading. Don Ketterling is a professional dealer and consultant from Reno, Nevada, who has taught this course for over a decade. Ketterling’s passion for the hobby started during the Eisenhower administration, when he famously traded Jefferson Nickels for Buffalo Nickels with his school’s lunch lady. He began his professional training at a coin shop at age 14 and, following his military service, has dedicated over 45 years to the profession. Having lived through the modern evolution of grading, he brings a deep, historical perspective to the classroom. Ken Park is also in his fourth year of teaching the Advanced US Coin Grading and Problem Coins course. Park began his career at PCGS, where he served as a grader for two years before eventually returning to take on the role of Director of World Coin Grading. Following his tenure at PCGS, he successfully established and managed his own numismatic company.
