The Galloway Hoard inscriptions with Dr David Parsons

Hosted by Kirkcudbright Galleries On the 27th of April, Kirkcudbright Galleries was proud to host a talk with Dr David Parsons. He was telling us all about the fascinating discoveries from the Galloway Hoard. Buried at the beginning of the 10th century in Dumfries and Galloway, the Hoard lay undisturbed for a thousand years before being discovered by a metal detectorist in September 2014. This incredible find brings together the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. Six artefacts from the hoard bear Anglo-Saxon inscriptions, which raise questions about the linguistic and cultural make-up of those who buried the treasure, and of the wider local population. This talk will described and discussed the inscriptions and set them in the context of what is known about languages and societies around the Irish Sea in the ninth and tenth centuries. Participants in the Zoom call were invited to ask questions about the Hoard, these were posed by the event facilitator Shona Burns, who is an Arts Officer at Kirkcudbright Galleries.
