These years have left their mark on Cyprus's history for many reasons, and we'll explore one of them. They remain memorable because they gave the world the famous tragedy Othello, written by the brilliant writer and screenwriter William Shakespeare. This tragedy was based on real events that took place in Famagusta. "A port in Cyprus"—that's how William Shakespeare began his tragedy, leaving all the islanders confused, but also very happy. After all, Cyprus at that time had 19 coastal towns, all with good shipping ports. This is documented, in fact. In this regard, Famagusta was fortunate. A journalist compared one of the towers of the northern bastion to the residence of Othello and Desdemona. The name stuck, and then spread to the entire castle. Since then, it has been called Othello's Castle. Shakespeare's tragedy, published in 1604, literally exploded into the literary world and once again brought fame to Cyprus. Today, this citadel appears as a separate part of the Famagusta Fortress, surrounded by a deep moat. At the four corners of this rectangular structure rise massive round watchtowers. A dark vaulted corridor leads to the open courtyard of the castle, where a large stone structure stands. Its arched portals lead to the ceremonial hall, which is naturally lit by tall lancet windows. Once upon a time, ceremonial receptions were held in this hall, richly decorated with precious weapons, tapestries, and armor. Noble lords and beautiful ladies flocked here. Cypriot wine flowed freely. And when the heat subsided, the guests went out into the courtyard. Soft music played, melodious voices sang, and the guests enjoyed the evening sea breeze. And it was difficult to spot the treacherous Iago among these guests, who was already plotting a sinister crime and a sinister betrayal. Shakespeare scholars studied the prototypes for Othello's tragedy and settled on Christopher Moro, who served in Famagusta Castle in 1504-1505. He was a Venetian governor-general. He had dark skin. His surname was Moro, meaning black, and his coat of arms featured three black mulberries. He came to Cyprus with his Italian wife, who soon died under mysterious circumstances. Today, an image of a winged lion, the official symbol of the Venetian Republic, remains above the entrance to Othello's Castle. Next to it is the date 1492 and an inscription by Nicola Foscarini. It was under his leadership that the Famagusta fortress walls were completely reconstructed, and Othello's Castle acquired features of the Renaissance architectural style, a style it has preserved to this day.
