THE ARCHITECTURE — BATLLEIROIG Enric Batlle and Joan Roig — two of Catalonia's most celebrated architects — took a trapezoidal plot between a motorway and a railway line and refused to build a box. Instead they drew a ring. An open- air promenade that loops through the entire site. No roof. No escalators buried in fluorescent light. Just a Mediterranean garden with shops tucked into it. Palm trees. Flowering shrubs. Native species chosen for low water consumption. Wood and stone and warm terracotta tones. From the motorway it looks metropolitan and monolithic — a landmark. From inside it feels fragmented, urban, almost like a village plaza. The parking is underground — but bathed in natural light. The central square fills with restaurant terraces. The whole site breathes. BREEAM «Very Good» certification. First international shopping centre in the world to earn the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate.
