The Miner's Way & Historical Trail - Stage 4 (Highwood to Ballyfarnon via Glen)

The Miner’s Way & Historical Trail is a network of walking paths that wind their way through the north-west plains of Ireland, connecting parts of North Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo. This video is focusing on Stage 4, covering the 14km from the area of Highwood, through the trail junction at Ballyfarnon north to Geevagh, and finishing in Glen, one of the remote corners of the trail. The Miner's Way follows many of the paths once used by miners going to work in the Arigna Mines in north Roscommon. This section makes a circuit starting from Arigna and travelling via Keadue, Ballyfarnon and Corrie Mountain to return to Arigna. The Historical Trail also runs in a loop leaving the Miners Way at Keadue and running to Lough Key Forest & Activity Park, Boyle, Carrowkeel, Castlebaldwin and Highwood before returning to the Miners Way at Ballyfarnon. A third loop connects the Miners Way to the Leitrim Way and goes round Lough Allen by Drumkeeran, Dowra, Drumshanbo and back to Arigna. The Miners Way and Historical Trail is 129km in length The town of Boyle is one of the major starting points for this hiking trail, with rail and bus connections. In the town you’ll find Boyle Abbey, a twelfth century Cistercian monastery that remains an excellent example of Ireland’s early Cistercian foundations, as well as King House, a restored Georgian Mansion sitting right in the heart of Boyle.
