My first, more in-depth look at a gasoline generator. To check the generator windings, simply ring the armature windings and measure the resistance directly on the brushes. Then, if everything is OK, apply excitation voltage to the armature, preferably 20-25 V, and measure the voltage at the winding terminals. The voltage on the armature winding should be around 88-90 V, and on the second pair of the same connector (reference voltage), around 20-25 V. If this voltage is present, you can safely install an automatic transfer switch (ATS). Using a trimmer resistor, adjust the generator output voltage to around 230 V on the ATS itself.
