Einsatz im libyschen Gefangenenlager – MONITOR-Interview mit Christoph Hey (Ärzte ohne Grenzen)

Deployment in a Libyan detention camp – MONITOR interview with Christoph Hey (Doctors Without Borders) Christoph Hey of Doctors Without Borders reports in an interview with MONITOR about the "shocking, horrific" conditions in a Libyan refugee camp. In his many years with Doctors Without Borders, he has never experienced such a situation. The living conditions are "catastrophic," both in terms of healthcare, nutrition, and hygiene. People are held there for months without legal basis and often lose all hope of freedom. In the interview, Hey also criticizes the German government and the EU for their cooperation with the Libyan coast guard, which repeatedly transports refugees from the Mediterranean back to the civil war-torn country and back to the detention camps. He expects the German government to at least work towards improving the living conditions of refugees in the Libyan detention camps. It must be understood that Libya is not a safe place, and legal, safe escape routes must be created. Hey led a Doctors Without Borders team in Libya, providing medical assistance in the Zintan detention center in western Libya. During his time there, he also visited other detention centers in the country. In the Zintan refugee camp, 20 people had died in the months prior to his arrival as a result of diseases spreading there. Dozens of people were crammed into cramped spaces, without daylight, without hygiene, and without medicine. MONITOR is a WDR production for ARD.
