Diagnostics revealed that dirt in one of the injectors had caused the nozzle needle to stick, leading to uncontrolled fuel delivery to the cylinder and unintentional misfiring (water hammer). A method for quickly identifying a jammed injector is demonstrated by loosening the high-pressure fittings and observing the foam/smoke coming from under the nut. As a temporary measure, at the customer's request, the injectors were ultrasonically cleaned, and the jammed needles were knocked out with an inertia hammer, allowing the engine to start.
